The competition consisted of the refurbishment of the old market in town into a mediumsize theatre (411 seats). We intended our intervention to be as much respectful as possible towards the existing building. Being consequent with this criteria we maintained the existing entrance and provided it with a dynamic canopy in order to make it more expressive whilst providing shelter to the public. With this strategy we also managed to enlarge the (limited) foyer outdoors. The stalls were placed in the longest wing. Being accessed from the foyer at the same level, a subtle slope was added so that, in combination of a slight curving of the rows, views over the stage were optimal. A small amphitheatre was also projected in order to increase the capacity of the theatre.

On the other wing we placed the technical premises for the theatre, public services and the bar, connected to the foyer and with the possibility to run independently from the theatre. The pavements were enlarged absorving the loading areas, giving more space to the public in front of the main entrance and providing the bar with a pleasant terrace. The only alteration of the existing volume corresponded to the stage box, on the top of which we hid the air conditioning machinery as well as the solar panels. The stage had to technical bridges and the floor consisted of a modular set of removable pieces to allow for scenographic effects. The Green Room, a key piece to the functioning and organization of a stage was next to the stairs which led to the dressing rooms on the first floor.
